Gallery 364 "Bay Ridge's First Fine Arts Gallery" is pleased to go forth with our January Art Competition, entitled "ECLECTIC".

We believe in giving just a keyword/s to our artists and see what they come forward with in terms of visual artwork. Please include an artist statement at time of entry.

If you are interested in submitting work for this competition (all mediums accepted), for consideration please call Georgine for an appointment to show your work, or email jpegs for review. No URL's please. You will be notified by email or phone of acceptance. And we look forward to seeing you at our opening reception.

The entry fee is $25.00 per piece, for work accepted, with a limit of 4 pieces per artist. All art must be ready to hang. Entering 4 pieces of accepted art will entitle you to submit two additional pieces for our affordable art wall for FREE.

This competition is open to all media. Criteria for judging is as follows: Beauty (symmetry,composition, proportions, framing) Skill, Meaning, Uniqueness, and Intent.

All art will be for sale. Gallery 364 retains 30% of all sales. Gallery 364 will award: ONE "Best In Show" winner will receive $150 Cash Prize. TWO "Honorable Mention" winners will each receive $50 Gift Certificate. (Winners will be announced at Opening Reception)

About The Art Room: Founded by Leigh Jewel Holliday, The Art Room is a fine arts

school in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn which caters to children ages 3 and up. Their tagline is “For

Brooklyn’s Young at Art!” The Art Room was built on the belief that early exposure to art is

crucial to the growth of young minds and helping kids develop other skills which will

benefit them greatly later in life. Art is one of the most important means of self-expression

and confidence building—combining imagination, spontaneity, playfulness and

experimentation. Children who are encouraged to express themselves through art will find

their thoughts, feelings and imaginations broadened and enriched. Most importantly, art is

a lot of messy fun while also being educational, visceral and therapeutic. Classes at The Art

Owner/Teacher Leigh Jewel Holliday was born and raised in Washington, DC. By the time

Leigh was 3, she had already fallen in love with art. After graduating with a Bachelor of

Fine Arts Degree from The Corcoran College of Art + Design, Leigh founded her first fine

arts school located in historic Georgetown. Years later, Leigh relocated to New York City

and decided to open up The Art Room in beautiful Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

Doug Schwab - Artist, Photographer, Educator

Doug Schwab is a Brooklyn based photographer. His current work is driven by his passion for photographing people and printing these pictures in the platinum/palladium medium and the gum bichromate method, both of which are 19th Century photographic techniques.

Doug Schwab was self-taught and working as a staff photographer for the major defense contractor ITT when he first took classes in photography. It was at this time that he studied with George Tice and Lisette Model.

He sees photography as a simple craft that can be a wonderful combination of technology and self-expression. This and his passion for photography drive his work.

For many years Schwab was a Leica enthusiast, but about 10 years ago he began working creatively with view cameras, that prior to that had always been a commercial photography tool.

He continues to work with an 8 x 10 view camera, and lately he's using digital negatives generated by smaller cameras as well. Schwab's work can be seen in galleries and alternative spaces throughout New York City and Brooklyn where Schwab is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Brooklyn College.

Classes for Students Helps Hone Artistic Skills and Talent

BAY RIDGE – Three years ago, a new art “star” first lit up in southwest Brooklyn, brightening an art gallery void and acting as a center of gravity for attracting creative people out of the woodwork and into the limelight.
Since its auspicious opening in the spring of 2007, Gallery 364, housed on the first floor of an historic brownstone on a tree-lined street now ready to blossom, has achieved growing popularity and success as word of its theme shows spread throughout Brooklyn.
A big step forward, said Gallery 364 founder, curator and photographer Georgine Benvenuto, happened when the gallery, at 364 72nd St., was included in the borough president’s annual bus tour of Brooklyn galleries. Now famed for its crowd-drawing theme shows and sales, Gallery 364 is hosting more classes in its studio space.
“We’ve launched a drawing class that has been a hit for students,” said Benvenuto, standing in the front-room gallery studio surrounded by chairs and drawing equipment. On the walls were paintings and photographs from the gallery’s recent “Love/Desire” exhibition.
The drawing class is an eight-week-long course that has been conducted in the evenings and is taught by artist David Jon Kassan (www.davidkassan.com), known worldwide for his realistic paintings and drawings, in the studio. “The students really get into their drawings, and David is superb in the way he conducts the classes and guides the students,” Benvenuto said.
“It’s such a cool experience to get out of the studio to share and develop painting concepts with students all over the world,” said Kassan on his web site. He has taught classes in Australia, Santa Fe and Belgium, and his art is in the model of the Ashcan School of American Realism.
Among the winning entries chosen by the judges in the recent Love and Desire exhibit and sale were “Lover” by Roz Sterling as best in show, and honorable mentions “Loveless” by Marina Bozen and “Love and Desire” by Dave Foss.
Another highly regarded work among all the gems on display was “You Belong to Me” by Michele Delfin. Benvenuto said, “She’s 15 years old and already an amazing talent. Everyone here was really impressed by her work.”
As with many of “Bay Ridge’s first art gallery and studio” theme shows, guest judges selected the winners. Judges for Love/Desire were painter Kassan and photographers Anthony Almeida and Gary Heller.
Expansion of Gallery 364’s cooperative efforts into the community and partnership with civic, business and nonprofit venues are in the works, Benvenuto said. She was excited among the gallery’s growing role in southwest Brooklyn and the constant increase of creative people drawn to Gallery 364.
Already Gallery 364 has been active with the Brooklyn Women’s Services office in Bay Ridge, providing photos for its walls. The gallery also conducted a pilot program of photographic therapy classes that Benvenuto said had a positive impact on its participants, encouraging them and providing them with creative and usable skills.
With warmer weather around the corner, Art In The Park will soon resume in cooperation with the Narrows Botanical Garden at Shore Road Park between 69th and 73rd streets, which provides outdoor space for artists and photographers to display and sell their works.
Art in the Park is a joint effort by Gallery 364 and the nonprofit, volunteer garden organization. It has been in action since 1995, when it cleaned the parkland and created Brooklyn’s second botanical gardens spot with a crew of community “green thumbs.”

‘Art In the Park Draws’ Artists, Community to Bay Ridge’s ‘Left Bank’

A New Year of Art

On Gallery 364's first birthday, Georgine Benvenuto put together a stunning collection of all the best in show winners and selections from the exhibitions of the year past. The show was a smashing success; there was hardly any standing room to be had.

We were pleased to receive a visit by state senator Marty Golden, a picture of which is included in the Brooklyn Eagle article by Harold Egeln covering the opening. Other names of note include attorney/ activist Charles Otey and photographer/ film maker Tony Denonno whose films have been featured at MoMA.

At this momentous occasion, Georgine and Richard T Scott, took the opportunity to announce the next stage in the gallery's development: Gallery 364 Studio. The Gallery will host figure drawing classes and later add curriculum based classes beginning with drawing and expanding to painting, photography, sculpture, and pottery.

MUSIC INSPIRES GALLERY 364 ART SHOW IN BAY RIDGE Gallery 364 Holds Art Show and Competition Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, N.Y., January 16, 2008 – On January 17, Gallery 364, Bay Ridge’s first fine arts studio and gallery, opens its latest art show themed, "Music," with an invitation-only reception. The press is invited from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and the general public may attend from 7 – 10 p.m.

The show runs through January 31, 2008. Refreshments for the reception are provided compliments of Circles Restaurant in Bay Ridge, and Eufemia "Effie" Maldari. Musician and singer Lisa Scherma, of Staten Island, will provide the entertainment. Gallery 364 is at 364 72 nd St. in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. After opening night, admission to the show is by appointment only, due to limited space. Visitors can make an appointment by calling Georgine Benvenuto at 917-767-3848.

Gallery 364 prefers to give the artist a theme word, and let the artists express their literal or metaphorical interpretation of that word. For this show, 26 pieces, representing 14 artists, were selected to be in the show out of a total of 75 artists who submitted their work. Various media were used to create the art in the show, including oils, ceramic, acrylics, watercolor, and photography. The art competition will be judged by Gallery 364 owner (and professional photographer), Georgine Benvenuto, watercolorist Doug Opalski, and artist James Belena, whose artwork will also be on display, who will choose the winning piece based on aesthetic appeal, technical skill, meaning, uniqueness, and intent. All artwork will be for sale.
