Gallery 364 "Bay Ridge's First Fine Arts Gallery" is pleased to go forth with our Sept. Art Competition, entitled "THE ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAIT".

Gallery 364 "Bay Ridge's First Fine Arts Gallery" is pleased to go forth with our Sept. Art Competition, entitled "THE ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAIT".

An environmental portrait is a portrait executed in the subject's usual environment, such as in their home or workplace, and typically illuminates the subject's life and surroundings.

By photographing a person in their natural surroundings, it is thought that you will be able to better illuminate their character, and therefore portray the essence of their personality, rather than merely a likeness of their physical features. It is also thought that by photographing a person in their natural surroundings, the subject will be more at ease, and so be more conducive to expressing themselves, as opposed to in a studio, which can be a rather intimidating and artificial experience.

The surroundings or background is a key element in environmental portraiture, and is used to convey further information about the person being photographed.

While it is often true that the background may dominate the subject, this need not necessarily be so. In fact, the details that convey the message from the surroundings can often be quite small and still be significant. The key seems to be in the symbolism expressed by various elements in the background; for instance, a baseball cap may not tell you much about your subject (unless he or she is a baseball player), but a chef's hat gives you a lot more detail about who he is and what he does.

If you are interested in submitting work for this competition (all mediums accepted), for consideration please call Georgine for an appointment to show your work, or email jpegs for review. No URL's please. You will be notified by email or phone of acceptance. And we look forward to seeing you at our opening reception.

About The Art Room: Founded by Leigh Jewel Holliday, The Art Room is a fine arts
school in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn which caters to children ages 3 and up. Their tagline is “For
Brooklyn’s Young at Art!” The Art Room was built on the belief that early exposure to art is
crucial to the growth of young minds and helping kids develop other skills which will
benefit them greatly later in life. Art is one of the most important means of self-expression
and confidence building—combining imagination, spontaneity, playfulness and
experimentation. Children who are encouraged to express themselves through art will find
their thoughts, feelings and imaginations broadened and enriched. Most importantly, art is
a lot of messy fun while also being educational, visceral and therapeutic. Classes at The Art
Room focus on all fundamentals of fine arts including drawing, painting, sculpture, and
mixed media.
Owner/Teacher Leigh Jewel Holliday was born and raised in Washington, DC. By the time
Leigh was 3, she had already fallen in love with art. After graduating with a Bachelor of
Fine Arts Degree from The Corcoran College of Art + Design, Leigh founded her first fine
arts school located in historic Georgetown. Years later, Leigh relocated to New York City
and decided to open up The Art Room in beautiful Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

PROFESSOR DOUG SCHWAB GUEST JUDGES "ARTIST CHOICE" ART COMPETITION.

Doug Schwab - Artist, Photographer, Educator

Doug Schwab is a Brooklyn based photographer. His current work is driven by his passion for photographing people and printing these pictures in the platinum/palladium medium and the gum bichromate method, both of which are 19th Century photographic techniques.

Doug Schwab was self-taught and working as a staff photographer for the major defense contractor ITT when he first took classes in photography. It was at this time that he studied with George Tice and Lisette Model.

He sees photography as a simple craft that can be a wonderful combination of technology and self-expression. This and his passion for photography drive his work.

For many years Schwab was a Leica enthusiast, but about 10 years ago he began working creatively with view cameras, that prior to that had always been a commercial photography tool.

He continues to work with an 8 x 10 view camera, and lately he's using digital negatives generated by smaller cameras as well. Schwab's work can be seen in galleries and alternative spaces throughout New York City and Brooklyn where Schwab is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Brooklyn College.

CONGRATS TO ANTHONY ALMEIDA BEST IN SHOW "WATER"

Features

‘Water’ Quenches Creative Thirsts at Gallery 364 Show
by Harold Egeln (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 03-16-2009
Southwest Brooklyn Space Goes International
By Harold Egeln
Brooklyn Daily Eagle

BAY RIDGE — From the city’s Narrows to Switzerland’s Lake Lucrene, the new “Water” art show for March at Gallery 364 in Bay Ridge signals Bay Ridge’s first art gallery entry as an international showcase.

“I grew up by the beautiful Lake Lucerne, and my father would often show me the boats and vessels docked and sailing on the lake. It gave me a sense of wonder and set off my imagination,” said Swiss citizen Marco Schmid – an artist known as “Mr. Kong” — at his first Brooklyn exhibit featuring his acrylic paintings of his stylized mermaids “Marina” and “Rivera.”

He recently began a one-year tour of the United States with artist Vero Schmid (“Queen Kong”), and the couple will be criss-crossing the country in search of art adventures and exposure. “This is a remarkably wonderful space to exhibit, and we’re glad to be doing this in Brooklyn,” said the artist sharing the space with many Brooklyn-based artists.

H2O was the artist formula for Gallery 364’s theme of the month show and sale – “Water” — framed inside the entire first floor of an historic brownstone house on the residential tree-lined block of 72nd Street in Bay Ridge, a destination and home to the area’s growing art colony.

There was a contest for the best in show and honorable mention, a feature of the gallery founded in April 2007 by professional photographer Georgine Benvenuto. Making those waves were two winners. One was “Fire Hydrant Frenzy,” a black-and-white photograph taken in 1969 by Anthony Almeida of children splashing in the hydrant’s spray.

The other winner was Trisha O’Donnell’s “Beach” painting of a Coney Island scene with people resting on the beach. By pure coincidence, the two artworks were mounted side-by-side on the wall.

For Park Slope artist Carole Harris, her photo of raindrops dripping off flowers — “Crying Sunflowers” — was among the many and greatly varied photographs and paintings that dazzled viewers as artists and photographers took up the challenging “Water” theme call to them.

Harris, an English professor at NYC College of Technology, is looking forward to her two-month-long show at a Starbucks in Park Slope, at 164 Seventh Ave. Titled “Route 441 — Signs from Flannery O’Connor’s Milledgeville,” it is running from April 1 through May 31 with photos of the fiction writer’s town in Georgia.

For Brooklyn artist Katarzyna Polkowska, born in Warsaw, Poland and a Pratt Institute graduate, her “The Rising Sun,” showing the sun rising over sea waves in a stained glass mosaic on wood artwork, gave a rare look at a now uncommon and ancient art medium.

She noted, “Artworks made with stained glass mosaics are not seen too much these days. I love the medium and glad that I have this opportunity to exhibit in this fantastic space.”

Photographer Larry Nicosa, a frequent exhibitor, displayed his black-and-white photo of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in the mist with a fogbank along the shoreline. It made the towering structure seem like it was emerging from or descending into the mists of time.

“Wow, this is just great!” exclaimed attorney Bob Howe, president of the Merchants of Third Avenue as he enjoyed the “Water” art show on his home turf of Bay Ridge, mingling with regular and brand-new first-time visitors

Richard Scott-Artist- Best in Show- Oil Painting "NOCTURNE"

(the following printed by wikipedia.org)

A nocturne (from the French for "nocturnal") is usually a musical composition that is inspired by, or evocative of, the night. Historically, Nocturne is a very old term applied to night Offices and, since the Middle Ages, to divisions in the canonical hour of Matins.
The name nocturne was first applied to pieces in the eighteenth century, when it indicated an ensemble piece in several movements, normally played for an evening party and then laid aside. Sometimes it carried the Italian equivalent, notturno, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's quadraphonic Notturno in D, K.286, written for four lightly echoing separated ensembles of paired horns with strings, and his Serenata Notturna, K. 239. At this time, the piece was not necessarily evocative of the night, but might merely be intended for performance at night, much like a serenade.
In its more familiar form as a single-movement character piece usually written for solo piano, the nocturne was cultivated primarily in the nineteenth century. The first nocturnes to be written under the specific title were by the Irish composer John Field, generally viewed as the father of the Romantic nocturne that characteristically features a cantabile melody over an arpeggiated, even guitar-like accompaniment. However, the most famous exponent of the form was Frédéric Chopin, who wrote 21 of them. Later composers to write nocturnes for the piano include Gabriel Fauré, Alexander Scriabin and Erik Satie (1919), as well as Peter Sculthorpe. One of the most famous pieces of nineteenth-century salon music was the "Fifth Nocturne" of Ignace Leybach, who is now otherwise forgotten.
Other examples of nocturnes include the one for orchestra from Felix Mendelssohn's incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream (1848), the set of three for orchestra and female choir by Claude Debussy (who also wrote one for solo piano) and the first movement of the Violin Concerto No. 1 (1948) by Dmitri Shostakovich. French composer Erik Satie composed a series of five small nocturnes. These were however, far different from those of Frédéric Chopin and John Field, based on minor chords.
The first movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata has also been considered a nocturne (certainly, Ludwig Rellstab, who gave the piece its nickname, thought it evocative of the night), although Beethoven did not describe it as one.
Nocturnes are generally thought of as being tranquil, often expressive and lyrical, and sometimes rather gloomy, but in practice pieces with the name nocturne have conveyed a variety of moods: the second of Debussy's orchestral Nocturnes, "Fêtes", for example, is very lively.
The word was later used by James McNeill Whistler in the title of a number of his paintings, consistent with his theory that fine art should essentially be concerned with the beautiful arrangement of colors in harmony. Debussy's nocturnes were inspired by Whistler's paintings[citation needed]. Several other artists followed suit.
