The Council
Of
The City of New York

Vincent J. Gentile
Council Member

BAY RIDGE−Starting November 1, the Bay Ridge Greenmarket will feature
another group alongside the farmers who provide residents with fresh food
every weekend: Bay Ridge artists!

Councilman Vincent J. Gentile will welcome at least four artists this
coming weekend. Their artwork and photographs will be featured on the 94th
Street fence that surrounds the parking lot in which the new Bay Ridge
Greenmarket is located.

“Because of the local demand for accessible and fresh food, the Bay Ridge
Greenmarket has become a fantastic local resource,” Councilman Gentile
said. “And even better, it’s become more than that. It’s morphed into a
true town square that enriches the community through the participation of
local schools, organizations and now artists.”

On past weekends, Councilman Gentile has arranged for the bands and chorus
groups from local schools to perform at the Greenmarket. On the kick-off
week of the local farmers market (Oct. 4), The Banjo Rascals performed, to
the delight of neighborhood shoppers and residents.

The inclusion of artists associated was organized by Councilman Gentile
and Georgine Benvenuto, owner of a local art gallery called Gallery 364.

Gallery 364 is the only fine arts studio and gallery in the Bay Ridge
neighborhood. It also features monthly art competitions and special art
events. The Greenmarket “fence show” will feature the work of Bay Ridge
photographers and Painters, who will be on hand selling their original
work.

Artists participating in the November 1 fence show include Larry Nicosia
and Dave Foss.

Mr. Nicosia is a photographer, and a lifelong resident of Bay Ridge. At 12
years of age, he developed his first roll of film, and In Fort Hamilton
High School he photographed the school plays. At 19 years old, he took his
passion for photography to Vietnam.

After retiring from the City’s Department of Sanitation in 2006, Mr.
Nicosia dedicated himself to his passion full time, focusing primarily on
street photography.
Mr. Foss is an internationally-known, fine-art photographer, known for his
photographs of nude women in dramatic landscapes and architectural
settings. His award-winning image "Music Box Dancer," which depicts a nude
dancer in front of Coney Island's famed Parachute Jump, is just one
example of how he uses light and structure to compose dynamic photographs.

‘Art In the Park Draws’ Artists, Community to Bay Ridge’s ‘Left Bank’

Narrows Botanical Gardens/Gallery 364 Series Frames Community’s Arts Renaissance

By Harold Egeln
Brooklyn Eagle

BAY RIDGE – The Bay Ridge art scene, experiencing a cultural renaissance, has gained a park-side waterfront venue, a living painting on the pastoral canvass of the Narrows Botanical Gardens, through the new Art in the Park Summer Series.

Spending this past Sunday in the park with Georgine Benvenuto, photographer and Gallery 364 owner, and Joan Regan, a founder of the Narrows Botanical Gardens, were several artists. A few of them were displaying for the first time at the new outdoor summertime series and interacting with other artists and the community. They experienced the joy of sharing, and, now and then, the happiness of a sale of their original creations.

BAY RIDGE CELEBRATES GALLERY 364 FIRST YEAR

Bay Ridge Celebrates Gallery 364’s First Year
by Harold Egeln (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 05-22-2008

Artworks and Photos Get Kudos from Civic And Business Leaders at Anniversary Show
By Harold EgelnBrooklyn Eagle
BAY RIDGE — A homegrown art gallery and studio, Bay Ridge’s first, is attracting a large artistic community around Bay Ridge through the vision of a photographer and her friends. The grassroots venue for that vision, Gallery 364, held its first anniversary celebration at a reception on Thursday evening in the historic house that it calls home.
“Bay Ridge needs more of this,” said state Senator Marty Golden upon his first visit to the gallery, located at 364 72nd Street and open to the public by appointment. “What Georgine Benvenuto is doing demonstrates a lot of potential for our community’s artistic resources. I’m very impressed with what she has created here.”
Bay Ridge resident Benvenuto, a staff photographer for the Brooklyn Eagle, is the founder and curator of the gallery, along with friends in the artistic community, and was in focus in Bay Ridge’s viewfinder of congratulations.
“This is fantastic!” said Shelia Brody, co-owner of The Spa and Wellness Center on Third Avenue, attending the gallery for the first time. “This is just what the community has needed for a long time.” What visitors see is a full first floor of gallery space with four open rooms that flow one into the other like the turning of a book’s pages. A bending hallway adds to the spacious sensation of exploration and inspiration.
“You’re in this wonderful art gallery that could be in any of the world’s art centers. And, then, you look out the back porch window and there’s our Bay Ridge with its backyard gardens. What a wonderful feeling!” said delighted student Alex Shamin about Gallery 364.
Shamin, a friend who helped create and build the space with Benvenuto, has watched and experienced Gallery 364’s first year. “For every show there are new people who attend and who are exhibited. More people get involved with each new show. I’m very glad that we have this here in our community.”
The first anniversary show, running through the end of May, features many of the artworks and photos that were best in shows and honorable mentions in the previous theme shows. They include “9/11,” “Timeless,” “Bridges,” “Seasons,” “Music,” “Skin” and “Windows,” with several of the artists and photographers at the reception.
Snapshots and Brushstrokes of Praise
Tony Denonno, a longtime photographer and award-winning film/video maker in Bay Ridge was glad for the venue. “It’s incredible to have this here and see all the work that goes into it. Here we have a wonderful art gallery in Bay Ridge, founded and run by a talented and down-to-earth person, our Georgine Benvenuto. There’s been a need for artists to come together and connect, and now we have it.”
“It’s fantastic having a place to exhibit the arts through this studio in Bay Ridge,” said photographer Gary Heller. “I like the opportunity to show my works right here.” Photographer Dave Foss, another Bay Ridge resident, agreed. “It’s a great place. This is exactly what we need in Bay Ridge.”
Enthused supporter of the arts and culture in Bay Ridge, attorney and newsman Charles Otey, marketing director of the Merchants of Third Avenue, is delighted about Gallery 364. “This is magnificent! Bay Ridge is opening its arms to the arts and we need more of this. I enjoy every show, and every time I came here I see new faces and new artists.”
“I have to say that I am very proud of what is being done here,” said Tom Kane, an Eagle writer and Brooklyn-One Theater executive director. “Georgine had a dream a year ago. Now it’s a reality for everyone who appreciates the arts.”
“I’m looking forward to the tenth anniversary,” said civic activist Peter Killen, a retired detective from the 68th Precinct. “Some of the paintings and artworks are and will be hanging in our home.”
An impressed John Qualione, Senator Golden’s media aide, also on his first visit to the gallery, said, “I didn’t know what to expect coming here. Now I see that this is very unique to the community. More people should come. It’s like bringing the art world of Manhattan into Brooklyn, but this is Brooklyn homegrown at its best.”
Figure Drawing Sessions and Camera Club Are Next at the Gallery.
“I’m thrilled with the turnout,” said Benvenuto, thanking all those who attended the celebration. “Now it’s time to take the next step with the community of artists we’ve created. We’re funded by friends, artists and myself.”
The next step includes classes at Gallery 364, starting with figure drawing sessions with instructor Richard Scott. The sessions will feature three-hour classes with a live model. A community camera club will soon follow.
“Gallery 364 is creating a sense of community for the arts and arts education,” said Scott. “Through the studio and classes we have an interactive venue to engage the community. There’s certainly a strong sense of community in Bay Ridge.”
The next show starting in mid-June is “Coney Island.” For more information about Gallery 364 shows, gallery visit-appointments and classes call (917) 767-3848.

A New Year of Art

On Gallery 364's first birthday, Georgine Benvenuto put together a stunning collection of all the best in show winners and selections from the exhibitions of the year past. The show was a smashing success; there was hardly any standing room to be had.

We were pleased to receive a visit by state senator Marty Golden, a picture of which is included in the Brooklyn Eagle article by Harold Egeln covering the opening. Other names of note include attorney/ activist Charles Otey and photographer/ film maker Tony Denonno whose films have been featured at MoMA.

At this momentous occasion, Georgine and Richard T Scott, took the opportunity to announce the next stage in the gallery's development: Gallery 364 Studio. The Gallery will host figure drawing classes and later add curriculum based classes beginning with drawing and expanding to painting, photography, sculpture, and pottery.

Richard Scott-Artist- Best in Show- Oil Painting "NOCTURNE"

(the following printed by wikipedia.org)

A nocturne (from the French for "nocturnal") is usually a musical composition that is inspired by, or evocative of, the night. Historically, Nocturne is a very old term applied to night Offices and, since the Middle Ages, to divisions in the canonical hour of Matins.
The name nocturne was first applied to pieces in the eighteenth century, when it indicated an ensemble piece in several movements, normally played for an evening party and then laid aside. Sometimes it carried the Italian equivalent, notturno, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's quadraphonic Notturno in D, K.286, written for four lightly echoing separated ensembles of paired horns with strings, and his Serenata Notturna, K. 239. At this time, the piece was not necessarily evocative of the night, but might merely be intended for performance at night, much like a serenade.
In its more familiar form as a single-movement character piece usually written for solo piano, the nocturne was cultivated primarily in the nineteenth century. The first nocturnes to be written under the specific title were by the Irish composer John Field, generally viewed as the father of the Romantic nocturne that characteristically features a cantabile melody over an arpeggiated, even guitar-like accompaniment. However, the most famous exponent of the form was Frédéric Chopin, who wrote 21 of them. Later composers to write nocturnes for the piano include Gabriel Fauré, Alexander Scriabin and Erik Satie (1919), as well as Peter Sculthorpe. One of the most famous pieces of nineteenth-century salon music was the "Fifth Nocturne" of Ignace Leybach, who is now otherwise forgotten.
Other examples of nocturnes include the one for orchestra from Felix Mendelssohn's incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream (1848), the set of three for orchestra and female choir by Claude Debussy (who also wrote one for solo piano) and the first movement of the Violin Concerto No. 1 (1948) by Dmitri Shostakovich. French composer Erik Satie composed a series of five small nocturnes. These were however, far different from those of Frédéric Chopin and John Field, based on minor chords.
The first movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata has also been considered a nocturne (certainly, Ludwig Rellstab, who gave the piece its nickname, thought it evocative of the night), although Beethoven did not describe it as one.
Nocturnes are generally thought of as being tranquil, often expressive and lyrical, and sometimes rather gloomy, but in practice pieces with the name nocturne have conveyed a variety of moods: the second of Debussy's orchestral Nocturnes, "Fêtes", for example, is very lively.
The word was later used by James McNeill Whistler in the title of a number of his paintings, consistent with his theory that fine art should essentially be concerned with the beautiful arrangement of colors in harmony. Debussy's nocturnes were inspired by Whistler's paintings[citation needed]. Several other artists followed suit.
